BIRUTJATIO

Birutjatio Sahitya Sammiloni is an independent non-profit press based in Santiniketan, India, founded in 2013. It grew out of the magazine Birutjatio Patrika, founded in 2008, that focuses, in print as well as online, on bringing together a diverse set of literary genres. The list is eclectic and multilingual, uniting under one canopy Indian poetry (Asampurno Dhusar Uptyaka  by Debika Datta, in Bengali) and international poetry (Lucy, by Bollingen Prize winning poet Jean Valentine, in English and Bengali); A Worrisome State of Bliss, a collection of short stories by Swiss-American writer Christoph Keller; a translation from Marathi into Bengali of Vijay Tendulkar’s play Shantata! Court Chalu Ahe by Sukla Basu (Sen); Santiniketan Sangoskritir Sandhane, a collection of essays on Rabindranath Tagore’s idea of Santiniketan and its present-day manifestation; Rabindranath Tagore and America: Responses and Overtures, a collection of essays on Tagore’s reception in America; the debut collection Moddho Bitto Anu-Poromanu, by Nurul Hassan, among other titles. Birutjatio was originally a platform for friends from school to assemble again, continue writing together and exchange opinion. over the years it has transformed into a platform for broader literary cooperation, for example:  its flagship the Bangla American Poetry  Project, which brings out a series of selected poems by American poets and their Bangla translation. Like its logo, the tree-human, Birutjatio Press remains rooted in its geographical origins while reaching out to the world.
